Major Projects:
Storage Refresh: As part of IT infrastructure refresh, migration of identified arrays to new generation enterprise arrays.
  1. Migration of 43 Enterprise class storage arrays to 7.
  2. Refresh of overall 3.5 PB capacity ~ 15% of overall storage infra.
  3. Reduction in DC racks from 85 to 12.

Disk Based Backup: Bharti Airtel had little over 100 thousand LTO tapes in environment, with an objective to go tapeless while still meeting business requirements following has been executed as part of Phase 1.
  1. Deployment of disk based backup appliances with 3 PB capacity.
  2. Migration of one of largest DB2 instance of approx. 450TB to backup appliances while reducing backup window by 30% and media by 3000.
  3. Reduction of another 17% tapes by migrating operational backups to appliances.
  4. Phase 2 deployment should bring down media consumption by another 25% by reducing media count to 60 thousand.
 
Private Cloud: With an objective to provide self-service to business users for provisioning of infrastructure on demand, Airtel’s private cloud was conceptualized. Responsibilities for projects are:
  1. Formation of a new team with required skills to support infrastructure in 24x7 environment.
  2. Deployment of infrastructure in multiple DCs across India.
  3. Rollout of SDDC (Software defined data center) to achieve borderless DC using NSX as underline technology.
  4. Commissioning of enterprise class arrays of 4 PB capacity
  5. Installation and commissioning of compute with over 12000 cores and over 100 TB memory
  6. DR for critical workloads using VMWare SRM
  7. Deployment and integration of backup appliances with over 1200 TB capacity for data protection.
  8. Self service module for end users for provisioning on infrastructure on demand.
 
 
SAN Fabric: SAN fabric refresh of aging infra to latest director class switches while achieving following business benefits:
  1. Refresh of approx. 5000 SAN ports to 3500 ports on 16G connectivity while reducing SAN infra by 15%.
  2. Moved away from core-edge topology. All endpoints are now connected to Directors.
  3. Deployment of ICLs across multiple DCs, with this 3 DCs are interconnected while forming single fabric.
  4. Migration from conventional cabling to future proof modular structured cabling, that can be up scaled 10G / 16G to 40G / 100G without any change in cabling infrastructure.
 
Insourcing: As most of infrastructure is managed by different partners, with an objective of cost optimization for infrastructure management and development of in-house skills, insourcing was planned. Which resulted in:
  1. Building of a new team with various skills and SMEs primarily on virtualization, H/W, OS, Backup, SAN and Storage technologies.
  2. Infrastructure support for various projects
  3. 200+ physical servers of Cisco USC, Dell and HP
  4. 7 storage arrays of approx. 2 PB capacity (Hitachi, HP and EMC)
  5. Over 1200 VMs on MS Hyper-V, Red hat Hypervisor and VMWare
  6. Reduction of infrastructure support cost by 75%
 
Foundation services: In order to support new private cloud environment, basic infrastructure was needed which consists of following technologies and is working efficiently to support business needs.
  1. Anti-Virus – Deployment of Symantec AV for private cloud.
