The Manager Applied Research and Ingredients is responsible for the leadership and implementation of innovation in the areas of batters, coatings, ingredients, and food science. Leading a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts this position drives strategic and applied research to deliver results against the R&D technology roadmap. The Manager position is responsible for steering multiple projects in parallel ensuring collaboration and connectivity across their direct reports, R&D and other McCain technical functions globally. This requires close interaction with peers in those technical functions. The role is required to connect internally and externally to identify opportunities, trends, problems and devising targeted innovation and research in response.

The manager ensures a pipeline of short to long-term research and innovation delivers against technology unlocks and the R&D technology roadmap. A core responsibility is leading and managing the results and outputs of their work. Strong project management is crucial. The manager must utilize stewardship to manage formulations and ingredients that are of global interest in the McCain portfolio. The position is responsible for managing intellectual property and protecting McCain interests appropriately while facilitating speed of execution in areas where IP is not advantageous. Capturing, cataloguing and systemizing pertinent information for legacy utilization is a core element of the role.

The position demonstrates an advanced understanding of food science and ingredient/formulation science as well as competence in applying these skills through processing at various scales from lab, through pilot to full commercial scale.

The Manager is responsible for coaching and development of direct reports to ensure high levels of performance and engagement. A core requirement is to act as a translator ensuring technical output of their team is connected to the greater business and communicated in a competent manner.

The Manager reports into the Director R&D Technology Innovation and Applied Research. This role is r esponsible for 6 Global Reports who are technical subject matter experts, typically with advanced degrees.

Core Accountabilities/Outcomes :

1. Lead research and innovation to create McCain competitive advantage. Participate in delivering R&D technology roadmap outputs and results.

2. Provide expert technical knowledge, in combination with business strategy awareness to enable the analysis and selection of technologies for focused investigation, qualification & validation at bench and pilot.

3. Be the face of Applied Research and Food Ingredients within McCain, educating cross-functionals on what the team does, driving trouble-free collaboration with other technical functions. Ensure the team of Subject Matter experts are leveraged appropriately and are known for the expertise they bring.

4. Investigate, analyze and assess emerging technologies and technologies in competitive and non-competitive industries for applicability to drive growth and/or cost benefits

5. Accurate budget management and forecasting for innovation and research projects.

6. Build and maintain a strong external network to ensure McCain is on the forefront of new technology in Food Science and ingredients. Proactively collaborate and partner with the external network to create extensions of the team and accelerate deliverables.

7. Build and lead a high performing team of R&D scientists and corporate subject matter experts. Hire, onboard and retain an outstanding and diverse team that enjoys working together and has high engagement and commitment.

8. Build key internal R&D relationships (PD, sensory, regulatory, nutrition) and communication channels locally, regionally, and globally to enable the sharing of ideas, pipelines, troubleshooting and best practices. Leverage relationships to enable innovation adoption and advancement.

9. Apply product stewardship principles to manage a portfolio of key coatings formulations.

10. Systemize and catalogue batter and ingredient innovation and research to generate sustainable institutional knowledge. Develop, deliver and sustain a standardized batters and coatings training program designed to ensure base level knowledge amongst R&D and other applicable technical functions.

Required qualifications and experience:
  • Master's Degree or Bachelor's degree & 5 years' experience in Food Science, or related Science disciplines
  • Five years of technical research and/or innovation experience, preferably in food or related
  • Managerial or supervisory experience of teams of 3-5 people
  • Must understand food manufacturing at production scale
  • Competent management and understanding of Intellectual property and legalities of external collaborations
  • Candidates must have hands on approach; demonstrate a strong intellect and proficient skills in communications, combined with a drive to deliver results
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders and peers.Ability to stand alone, set clear standards and hold other accountable. Courage to have difficult discussions with groups from all levels of the organization
  • Excellent communication skills: is able to effectively and persuasively articulate positions both verbally and in electronic mediums to various audiences including senior executives in a clear, concise and compelling manner
  • Strong team player, highly motivated, who can effectively interface with and present results to all levels of management and teams across the business. Proven leadership experience, passionate about creating a successful inclusive global team environment
  • Ability to reconcile and navigate multiple stakeholder groups with differing priorities with a can-do mindset to maintain momentum
  • Experience in managing external relationships with vendors, equipment manufacturers and consultants
