POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director, Strategy and Corporate Development will support the Vice-President in defining BDC's strategy, and will play a lead role in developing annual strategic retreats, performing the market watch and leading related strategic initiatives that will influence the future performance of the organization.

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

The future director has proven to be visionary, skilled at simplifying complex concepts and good at bringing people together around a common vision.

This person will be responsible for a small team of talented strategy resources. He or she will be expected to coach these resources to produce high quality deliverables, and also to get hands-on with developing some deliverables independently.

The role of the Director is defined as follows:

Strategic retreats

Take charge of developing the content of the two strategic retreats (with the Senior Management Committee and Board of Directors):

  • Propose the agenda of topics to be covered during the strategic retreats

  • Orchestrate the planning of the retreats and the content development (including sections delivered by contributors external to the team)

  • Develop select portions of the content, and oversee the development of the other portions to ensure high quality deliverables

  • Contribute to the facilitation of strategic retreats, to the synthesis and identification of next steps

Market watch

Frame the monitoring of key trends and innovations in the financial services industry, and disseminate the findings:

  • Keep abreast of the latest industry developments, in Canada and around the world, that could have an impact on SMEs and on the environment in which BDC operates.

  • Disseminate market knowledge to the rest of the team on a regular basis.

  • Translate new market trends and SME needs into concrete opportunities for the organization.

  • Develop and/or frame the development of strategic documents synthesizing complex and detailed research and information to communicate key findings and recommendations.

Strategic initiatives

Be a key player in the conduct of strategic initiatives stemming from BDC's strategy:

  • Lead and/or contribute to various corporate-wide projects involving cross-functional teams. Develop trusting relationships with various stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges.

  • Coach and/or take charge of the development of workshops and documents leading to conclusions and actionable items. Contribute to the development of a business case, as required.

  • Given the high level of operational and conceptual complexity, develop a thorough understanding of the organization and its business lines.

  • Contribute to the development of concepts for innovative ideas and to the prioritization of innovative ideas and projects.

  • Support the Director, Strategic Planning when required, more specifically during the Business Units Planning exercise.

  • Support the Director, Innovation, as needed, particularly during the identification of innovative ideas and concept development.

  • Ensure good management of the employees under his/her responsibility in order to have a high-performing, motivated, committed team in "continuous learning" mode.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's degree in commerce / administration; a graduate degree would be an asset

  • More than 10 years of relevant experience in corporate strategy or corporate development; any other combination of experience deemed relevant will be considered

  • Experience in consulting firm would be a strong asset

  • Solid knowledge of the financial services industry, including the fintech sector.

  • Visionary, able to communicate complex concepts simply

  • Solid strategic thinking with pragmatic approach

  • Good quantitative analysis

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, combined with the ability to work collaboratively with / and coordinate internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to develop and structure complex strategic planning documents

  • Ability to coach and accompany resources in their development, and to keep them motivated

  • Curiosity and genuine interest in continuous learning

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, in both official languages

  • Ability to work in a team and under pressure to meet tight and often-conflicting deadlines

  • Good judgment, tact and discretion
